About Mr. Austin

Picture
From a very young age, I've been an avid reader.  My adventures in reading began when my great-grandmother purchased a subscription to Sesame Street books for me, the arrival of which I eagerly anticipated.  She was always the one who came through for my family, knowing just what we wanted and/or needed, as we had little money.  Sadly, she passed away when I was young and never knew the effect that her "investment" had on my life.
Growing up for me was far from easy.  After a family tragedy, I lived in foster care, was later adopted by my grandparents, and finally lived with friends of the family.  Through tough times, books provided me with a way to escape from it all.  Reading transported me to Who-ville, to Camelot, to Middle-earth, and to other fantastic realms that simply made more sense to me than my own turbulent world.  This obsession with reading led to my being advanced an entire grade level in school.

After graduating from Grossmont High School in 1994, I served in the Air Force as a military policeman while figuring out what I wanted to do with my life.  Five and a half years later, I realized what would give me the greatest sense of fulfillment in life: teaching young people, some of whom might also be struggling with life's obstacles, in my favorite subject.  I graduated from SDSU with a B.A. in English in 2002, and completed an M.A. in Education at PLNU in 2007.
